What is DNS?

Domain name server (DNS) records handles the server ip addresses.

All these records are defined when you edit your domain information from your registar. The most important and initially used dns record is name server record, which defines the nameserver addresses for locating your website's server. Typically these are like ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com where example.com is your webhost url. Each name server has ip addresses behind them. Host's local name servers decide on which server they have to forward the incoming request to individual domain name. All those requests are then processed through the server whose ip is defined for that host name.

Other records like 'A' record mentions its server's direct ip address where all requests are sent from client accessing the site.
